GTA 6 Is an "Ogre" Forcing the Entire Gaming Industry to Change Release Plans, Says Plague Tale Studio
Grand Theft Auto 6 hasn’t launched yet, but its impact is already being felt across the gaming industry. According to Asobo Studio producer Eric Chort, Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster is such a massive force that developers worldwide are planning their release schedules around it.
Speaking with Eurogamer, Chort described GTA 6 as an “ogre” that forces studios across the globe to rethink when they launch their games. The colorful comparison highlights a growing reality within the industry: Rockstar Games’ next blockbuster has become one of the biggest factors influencing release schedules in 2026.
Asobo, best known for the critically acclaimed A Plague Tale series, recently announced that its upcoming title, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, will launch in late August. The timing places the game well ahead of GTA 6’s November 19 release date and avoids the increasingly crowded September release window.
Why Studios Are Avoiding GTA 6’s Release Window
The reasoning is straightforward. GTA 6 is expected to dominate gaming conversations, media coverage, livestreams, and player attention for months after launch. With millions of players likely dedicating both their time and money to Rockstar’s next open world epic, publishers are understandably hesitant to release competing titles nearby.
As a result, many developers and publishers have shifted their games earlier in the calendar. The effort to avoid GTA 6 has created an unusual situation where more than ten major titles are now packed into a relatively short September release period.
Developers Are Already Feeling the “GTA 6 Effect”
Asobo is far from the only studio acknowledging GTA 6’s influence.
Remedy Entertainment has also indicated that releasing a game too close to Rockstar’s blockbuster would make it significantly harder to gain attention. Meanwhile, former Rockstar developer Felipe Busquets has argued that publishers may have overcorrected by rushing into September, effectively trading one massive competitor for a crowded field of competing releases.
Not everyone is moving out of the way, however. Publisher Devolver Digital has publicly committed to releasing a title on November 19, the same day GTA 6 launches, making it one of the few companies willing to challenge Rockstar’s release head on.
Industry analysts are also paying close attention. Research firm Ampere Analysis believes GTA 6 could create one of the biggest retention challenges ever faced by major live service franchises, including Call of Duty, as players devote more time to Rockstar’s highly anticipated release.
Will GTA 6 Really Hurt Every Game?
While the “ogre” comparison perfectly captures the industry’s concerns, the reality is more nuanced.
GTA 6 is an $80 open world action game targeting a massive mainstream audience. By contrast, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a narrative driven stealth adventure aimed at a more specific group of players. While there is certainly some audience overlap, the two games are not directly competing for exactly the same market.
That means not every title launching near GTA 6 is automatically doomed. Games that serve different audiences or offer unique experiences may still find success, even if they release relatively close to Rockstar’s giant.
Even so, Asobo’s decision highlights how seriously studios are taking GTA 6’s arrival. When publishers begin reshaping their schedules months in advance, it becomes clear that the game’s influence extends far beyond its own launch.
GTA 6 Is Reshaping the Industry Before Launch
Whether GTA 6 ultimately dominates every corner of the market remains to be seen, but one fact is already undeniable: its presence is reshaping the gaming industry’s calendar.
Rockstar Games never asked publishers to move their releases. The company simply announced a launch date. Yet the combination of enormous anticipation, more than a decade of waiting since GTA 5, and billions of dollars in projected revenue potential has convinced much of the industry to step aside.
GTA 6 won’t arrive until November 19, but its impact is already impossible to ignore. From shifting release dates to influencing publisher strategies, Rockstar’s next blockbuster is changing industry decisions months before players can even get their hands on it.
If Asobo Studio’s description is accurate, the “ogre” has already begun reshaping the gaming landscape long before launch day.
